Energy Management System for Photovoltaics and Electricity Storage
An energy management system connects the photovoltaic system, electricity storage, wallbox, and household appliances into a centrally controlled energy network. The goal is always the same: to use as much of the self-generated solar power as possible in the household itself, instead of feeding it cheaply into the grid and buying it back at a higher price.
In practice, the system performs several tasks simultaneously. It continuously measures generation and consumption via a connected smart meter, prioritizes consumers such as heat pumps or wallboxes, charges the storage unit specifically at midday, and discharges it into the household in the evening. This typically increases the self-consumption rate by 20 to 40 percent compared to systems without active control.
An overview of the suitable Electricity meters and smart meters You can find them as a complementary cluster in our shop. Smart meters are the sensors that provide the EMS with data in the first place and belong in any serious energy management solution.
EMS components from Huawei Sungrow and Solar Manager
For energy management systems, we offer solutions from three established manufacturers. Huawei EMMA A02 is the energy management assistant for the Huawei ecosystem with SUN2000 inverters and LUNA2000 storage systems. It controls charging and discharging processes, manages loads, and integrates comprehensive visualization via the FusionSolar app.
Sungrow introduces its own solution for the SH-RT hybrid inverter series: the iHomemanager Residential Energy Management System. Control is managed via the iSolarCloud app and supports PV surplus charging, time-of-use tariffs, and targeted consumer control.
With the Solar Manager The Gateway, available in Standard and Connect 2 versions, is the manufacturer-independent option in our product range. The Solar Manager works with various inverter brands and is the right choice if you want to integrate an existing system with components from different manufacturers.
Which energy management system is right for your PV system?
Which energy management system is right for your system depends primarily on which manufacturers' components are already installed. For those operating a Huawei system with SUN2000 inverters and LUNA2000 storage, the EMMA A02 is the most direct solution as a native option. Data flow, update paths, and fault diagnostics run most smoothly in this setup.
Users of Sungrow inverters are best equipped with the iHomemanager. Integration with iSolarCloud, connection to Sungrow storage systems, and control of Sungrow wallboxes function as a coordinated system. Solax storage systems can also be integrated into this combination because Sungrow and Solax smart meters are technically similar.
For mixed systems or older existing installations, the Solar Manager Gateway is the open solution. It communicates with numerous inverter brands via open interfaces and controls wallboxes, immersion heaters, or heat pumps simultaneously. We would be happy to clarify which option is right for you before you buy.
Home Energy Management System for increased self-consumption of PV power
A home energy management system measurably increases self-consumption because it selectively starts appliances at times when the PV system is producing surplus energy. Instead of starting a heat pump in the evening when electricity prices are high, it runs at midday as soon as the sun is providing sufficient energy.
The control system for electric cars works similarly. A wallbox capable of handling excess solar power starts the charging process as soon as sufficient solar energy is available and reduces the charging power when clouds appear. This way, the solar power flows directly into the car instead of being fed into the grid at a lower feed-in tariff.
Even immersion heaters for hot water preparation benefit from the EMS. They switch on precisely when excess energy is available, thus supplying free solar power directly to the domestic hot water storage tank. The combination of a wallbox, heat pump, and immersion heater under a single EMS yields the greatest self-consumption benefits.
Connection to dynamic electricity tariffs in Austria
In Austria, the market for dynamic electricity tariffs is developing rapidly. Providers such as aWATTar, Tibber, and smartENERGY offer tariffs that adjust hourly to the electricity exchange price. An energy management system with dynamic tariff integration can utilize these price fluctuations, charging the storage system during off-peak hours and discharging it during peak hours.
The Sungrow iHomemanager and the Solar Manager Gateway directly support the integration of dynamic tariffs. The Huawei EMMA A02 also has a growing list of supported tariff APIs in its current firmware. Specifically, this means that you automatically benefit from low electricity prices via the EMS without having to intervene manually.
